iLIVE
The iLIVE project will demonstrate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of two innovative interventions in end of life care by developing and evaluating:
A digital clinical tool to optimize medication management to relieve symptoms that occur at the end of life
An international volunteer programme to support patients dying in hospital, and their families
iLIVE will also provide in depth understanding of the concerns, expectations and preferences of dying patients and their caregivers, and deliver the first Core Outcome Set for care of the dying. It involves a 10-country prospective cohort study of 2,000 patients with a life expectancy of six months or less, across different settings, diagnoses, ages, genders, socio-economic and religious groups. The cohort study embeds two controlled clinical trials and puts the Collaborative at the forefront of research into care for the dying on a global basis.

iCODE
Now nearing completion, the aim of the iCODE project is to advance the international evidence base in the care of dying cancer patients. The “Care of the Dying Evaluation” (CODE) post-bereavement questionnaire has been translated into six languages, tested, and culturally adapted, and a common, core version developed for international use to facilitate systematic standardisation of assessment and care. The questionnaires formed the basis of an international survey and cross-comparison observational study of bereaved relatives’ views about the current quality of care within hospital settings and, based on the main concerns raised, key changes have been made within individual organisations’ clinical environments in two of the seven participating countries. The immediate direct impact of these changes will be assessed, from both a family and healthcare professional point of view.
